If Congress sees the same leadership in Texas A&M President Robert M. Gates that A&M found during his tenure, he will undoubtedly be confirmed, said Doug Slack, speaker of the Faculty Senate.
Gates, who served as president of A&M beginning in 2002, was nominated to serve as secretary of defense by President George W. Bush, replacing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who resigned Wednesday.
